Here are the latest opportunities in this week's edition of the Community Board. You are always welcome to suggest a program or highlight other resources as well! For Young Scholar or Davidson-specific events, check out our Upcoming Events.

Insider's View: Harvard, Yale and MIT

There’s no better way to learn about what a college is really like than to hear from the students who go there - - beyond the guide on the official college tour! To help, I’m putting together free webinars, "Insider's View," where college students from the Ivies and other highly selective colleges will talk about their schools. They’ll answer questions including "What type of student/person would be most happy at your school?" as well as sharing what they did in high school to help them get accepted. There will also be a Q&A! The webinar will feature students from Harvard, Yale and MIT. Parents and students are welcome to join: Sunday, April 21st, at 4 pm PT, 6 pm CT, 7 pm ET. Free! Lumate: Prepare Campers, Families, and Counselors for Overnight Summer Camps!

Many students go away for a few days, weeks, or even months in the summer for overnight camp adventures. While they may be bursting with excitement, fear and uncertainty will come hand in hand. Invite Lumate to join your family for camp this summer! Our experts are uniquely skilled at helping your child prepare for these leaps of independence - including separation from parents, engaging in new activities, and meeting new friends. Furthermore, we will train camp counselors, nurses, and other staff to feel competent in caring for these anxious campers. Clicker HERE to check out the website.

Chess Mentorship Opportunity for Young Scholars
As many of you know, we have been incredibly lucky to be working with Chess Grandmaster Ronen Har-Zvi over the past several years as he has been facilitating online Chess Seminars and mentoring Young Scholars in chess. The programs have been incredibly successful and have given many Young Scholars the opportunity to develop their chess talent with a Grandmaster.

The chess mentorship is now also available for beginners! As such, if your child is a beginner without prior serious chess experience, kindly mention the basics you feel will be useful for the mentorship.

  • Applications are due June 30, 2024
  • Ronen will also attend the Davidson Summit holding several long simul events from Friday, June 21st through Sunday, June 23rd for participants
  • Ronen will consider all applications over the coming weeks and will let you know if your Young Scholar has been accepted

    Listen
In this episode of the All Autism Talk Podcast, host Richie Ploesch discusses self-care and sensory needs with neurodivergent psychologist Dr. Megan Anna Neff. Through her own experiences of parenting and working with neurodivergent children, Dr. Neff describes using a sensory lens to support their needs. Viewing a situation through a sensory lens just means observing a routine or action, such as a morning routine, and reflecting on the amount of sensory experiences, requirements, or input it has. Based on those observations and reflections, the goal is then to modify the routine according to the sensory capacity of the child. Dr. Neff leads you through an example of using a sensory lens to support you in navigating the unique profile of your child.

He describes his own experiences of imagining alternative clothing as a child that went beyond designer labels. Through these experiences, he validated his own thought process through designing and creating his own clothing line. Sitafalwalla encourages you to embrace their imaginative thoughts in order to foster creativity and passion for your own interests.

      Read
In this book, author and entrepreneur Jenara Nerenberg examines neurodivergent women and girls and the ways that they are often overlooked. Pulling from her own experiences as an autistic person with ADHD and the stories of women with other diagnoses, she explores how various diagnoses can present differently in women. Through this exploration, she offers a different perspective from the common misconceptions society has of neurodivergent women. As she offers her perspective, Nerenberg demonstrates ways to celebrate and support the neurodivergent women and girls in your life.
